2010’s Red Dead Redemption was the spiritual successor to Red Dead Revolver. The title garnered numerous awards and it’s considered one of the best video games of all time. Naturally, fans clamored for a sequel. And after several long years, Rockstar Games is poised to deliver.
After years of rumors and speculation, Red Dead Redemption 2 is confirmed though it won’t be making its way to shelves this holiday season. Fans of the series will have to wait awhile before the Red Dead Redemption 2 release date arrives.
With Red Dead Redemption 2 release officially confirmed we want to take a look at the most important things to know, right now, about the Red Dead Redemption 2 release date, pre-orders, features and more.
We’ll continue to update this roundup with new details to check back for regular updates in the buildup to the game’s release date.
Red Dead Redemption 2 for PS4 & Xbox One
Red Dead Redemption 2 is confirmed for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Developers have shifted away from the PS3 and Xbox 360 so a release on those two aging consoles is unlikely. It’s unclear if the game will make it to Wii U, Nintendo Switch or the Windows PC.
Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC
The Red Dead Redemption 2 announcement arrived without confirmation for Windows PC users.
This doesn’t rule out Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC but this certainly won’t sit well with those who prefer Rockstar’s games on Windows.
It’s still early and we could of course see Rockstar announce Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC in the weeks ahead.
Some analysts believe the developer will release a version of the game for Windows PC down the road with one predicting a Red Dead Redemption 2 release date for PC in early 2018.
Remember, Grand Theft Auto 5 for PC arrived several months after it landed for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Release Date
The Red Dead Redemption 2 release date won’t land in 2016. Instead, Rockstar Games has confirmed a release for 2017.
The company hasn’t issued a specific release date for the game just yet so we’re left with a Fall 2017 release window. For reference, the Grand Theft Auto 5 release date landed at the start of the fall in mid-September.
It’s not clear when we’ll get an official Red Dead Redemption 2 release date for Xbox One and PS4. (And, fingers crossed, PC.) Those interested in the game’s release should signup for Rockstar’s mailing list.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Pre-Orders
Also of note is the fact that some retailers are already taking Red Dead Redemption 2 pre-ordersahead of the game’s release date.
Retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop are selling the game a year in advance and those with Amazon Prime and Gamers Club Unlocked accounts can take advantage of early Red Dead Redemption 2 deals.
Target is also offering an early Red Dead Redemption 2 deal that lasts through November 5th. The deal is a buy two get one free and it allows you to include a Red Dead Redemption 2 pre-order in the bundle.
Those not looking to buy from a third-party can pre-order the game via Sony (Microsoft says pre-orders for Xbox One are coming soon) or Rockstar itself.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Story, Characters & More
Rockstar says that Red Dead Redemption 2 will feature an “epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland” which seems to confirm an expansive single-player mode.
The characters in the teaser above haven’t been confirmed but there’s a ton of speculation and some of it points to a potential prequel featuring the protagonist from the first game, John Marston.
The developer goes on to say that the game’s “vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience.”
Grand Theft Auto 5 Online arrived alongside the single-player portion of the game and it looks like Rockstar has grand designs for Red Dead Redemption as well.
The company’s reportedly registered a Red Dead Redemption online domain ahead of the game’s launch next year. Look for the experience to build on GTA 5’s online mode.
Rockstar typically has used third-person view in its games though GTA 5 added in a unique first-person view. Naturally, fans of the Red Dead series are interested to see if the company brings that element to Red Dead Redemption 2.
Nothing is confirmed but here’s what Rockstar had to say about third-person and first-person during a question and answer session:
“We are excited by the response to our first effort at a first-person experience, but remain committed to third person games and may or may not use first person as a camera option in the future.
We do like to, whenever possible, give people options so they can play a game the way they like.”
Red Dead Redemption 2 Map
Earlier this year, an alleged Red Dead Redemption 2 map leaked showing some of the game’s potential locations. The map first appeared on NeoGAF.
While the alleged map was later removed from the website, some users were able to save it for the world to see.
According to TechRadar, this map is legit and it’s for Red Dead Redemption 2. There are numerous locations listed including The Great Plains, home to the Blackwater settlement.
There are also several bodies of water, something that we didn’t see in Red Dead Redemption.
If you’re curious about how the Red Dead Redemption 2 map stacks up with the map from the original, Reddit has you covered.
The image above shows how the official map from the first game stacks up, size-wise, with the leaked map for Red Dead Redemption 2.
PS4 Red Dead Redemption 2 Bonus
Sony and Rockstar have announced a partnership for Red Dead Redemption 2. Sony says that “PS4 players get first access to earn select online content in the vast open world of Red Dead Redemption 2.”
It’s not clear what this content is though Sony tells PS4 owners they can expect some more details in the near future.
The company also notes that the PS3 classic Red Dead Redemption will be coming to PlayStation Now soon.”
The original Red Dead Redemption is already available on Xbox One via Microsoft’s Backwards Compatibility feature.
